KARACHI - Heavy contingent of police on Saturday used water cannon and batons to disperse workers of the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) who were protesting for their regularisation outside the Press Club.

Hundreds of NCHD workers, working on contract for the last 10 years, were demanding job regularisation. They claimed that the government promised but did not take any step for their job confirmation. During the protest, when the workers tried to enter the Red Zone for staging protest at Sindh Governor House, police used force to break up their protest and avoid them from reaching the Governor’s House. Water cannon, teargas shells and batons were indiscriminately used on the demonstrators.  Several protestors were also taken into custody to Police and around 10 employees of NCHD were injured in the baton charge.

It is pertinent to mention here that, it was the third time NCHD employees tried to enter in red zone and faced the baton charge and uses of water cannon from police. The employees have also conduct hunger strike camp outside the Press Club for last one month but government authorities have turned dear ear to their concerns.    The NCHD employees vowed that they would continue their protest at Karachi Press Club until they received permanent jobs.
