ISLAMABAD - Punjab scored first victory in the 16th National Women's Basketball Championship after defeating Railways 31-17 here at the Hamidi Hall Pakistan Sports Complex.
Hosts Islamabad, Wapda and Sindh scored easy victories.  Punjab were clearly the better team against Railways as they dominated the game and never allowed Railways to make come back in all the four quarters and led 17-7 at the halfway stage. Almira played superbly and scored eight points. Rizwana scored six and Zulekha had five baskets. Amber Ayub scored seven points for Railways while Sariya and Afshan added five and two points respectively.
Islamabad won two out of two. They beat Sindh by 38-19. The home team was leading 6-2 by the end of the first quarter. Sindh gave them a good run in the second quarter but Islamabad managed to go into the break with a 16-10 advantage. Captain Roaa Tahir and Sara Mehmood showed their superb skills in the third and fourth quarters with scoring 12 points each while Saqiba Arshad added nine points. Nusrat six (6), Hajra (6) and Mehwish (3) had a good game for the losers Sindh. Defending champions Wapda routed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 79-12 and stamped their authority with a 31-4 advantage in the first quarter. Umme Laila scored 14 baskets for Wapda, Shiza Shahid smashed 12 while Fariha Khan added 11 baskets. Rimsha Rani (6) and Lal Mina (5) were the main scorers for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In the fourth and last match of the day, Sindh beat Railways 18-7. Nusrat managed 14 points while Hajra added four. Sariya (4) and Amber (3) were main scorers for Railways.
