BUREWALA-After listening to the growers' grievances, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Sikandar Hayat Bosan said that the government would address the problems at their doorsteps.

He added that the imposition of ban on inter-provincial transportation on wheat was not a wise decision by the Sindh government, saying that it increased the chances of corruption. He was addressing a farmers' gathering at Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation's Burewala Warehous on Monday.

Mr Bosan admitted that the farmers were the most deprived segment of the society in the country but they always showed patience and remained calm even in hard times. He said the problems faced by the community should be highlighted in the media and brought into his notice. He pledged to try his best to solve these problems. He said that corruption would not be tolerated in the procurement of the wheat process, 

On the occasion, Managing Director Captain (R) Tariq Masood said that Passco had launched the wheat procurement drive and gunny bags distribution had been started. He added that the government had assigned the federal grain procurement agency with a task of procuring 1.6 million tonnes of wheat from 15 tehsils in Punjab.

He said the immediate payment to growers had been ensured and they will get Rs 1,200 per mound from the bank in their respective area. He said that growers would be given Rs7 per 100 kilogrammes as delivery charges as well.

General Manager Field Brig (R) Rashid Ali said that all the arrangements had been finalised at the procurement centres. In the first phase, he detailed, small growers having area of 25 acre or less would be given up to 300 bags with the rate of 12 bags per acre while big farmers will be given up to 500 bags. He said that Passco had formulated a transparent and farmer-friendly wheat procurement policy. It has displayed banners with toll free numbers at every procurement centre for solving the hardships being faced by the wheat growers, he said.

MNAs Syed Sajid Mehdi, Tahir Iqbal, farmers' representatives Nadeem Mushtaq Ramay, Haji Muhammad Iqbal Bhatti and Rana Muhammad Wakeel informed the meeting of their grievances. MPAs Irshad Ahmad, Muhammad Yousuf, Assistant Commissioner Saifullah Sajid, Market Committee Administrator Muhammad Shahbaz, EDO Agriculture Shahzad Sabir, Salahuddin Chaudhry and Hafiz Rizwan Abid were also present.
