The national press is reporting gleefully that Bhasha dam with 6.4 million acres feet of storage would irrigate 33 million acres of land. That is incorrect. The total irrigated area of Pakistan is 47.5 million acres. How would it be possible for one dam to irrigate nearly 70 per cent of the total irrigated area of Pakistan? The correct figure ought to be 33 lacs or 3.3 million acres of land. The misquoted figure of 33 million acres of land needs to be corrected. By the time Bhasha is hopefully built in 10 years, it would probably not add a single acre to the land being irrigated at present as it would be only replacing the storage capacity lost in Tarbela and Mangla dams. -DR M.
