The Awami Workers Party (AWP) federal committee member Ch Fateh Muhammad has opposed the Punjab government’s bill presented in the Punjab assembly to hold the upcoming local body election on non-party basis.
In a press statement issued here, he said that the local body elections should be held on party basis, adding the political forces including the PML-N had pledged to devolve powers to the grass-roots level through local bodies but now the government seemed to be deviating from it promise.
He criticised what he called efforts to ‘select’ local government representatives, saying such an exercise would result in horse-trading. He demanded holding next local councils elections on party basis.
