PESHAWAR - A civil society organisation on Wednesday announced to launch an awareness campaign about the historic importance of ‘Walled City of Peshawar’ to preserve its beauty and to draw attention of authorities towards it. "Efficient steps needed for preservation and restoration of old historic buildings while preparing a beautification plan for the provincial metropolis," said Institute of Architect Pakistan spokesperson Mansoor Ahmad while addressing a news conference at press club. "An awareness drive barring the motive of "Beautification of Peshawar" would be started by holding mega events in next month in which all stakeholders concerned would participate," he added. Mansoor said the basic purpose of the campaign is to create awareness among general masses to keep the city clean. Stress would be applied on the relevant authorities to take practical steps for the development and restoration of old buildings in Peshawar. He said proper planning is essential for the development of Peshawar but the projects are implemented without any planning. He also claimed the project attained high attention after funding by foreign agencies. On the government plan of launching the Mass Transit Services in Peshawar, he said it is an excellent step, but a pre-feasibility study is required before executing the project in the provincial capital. Mansoor also appreciated the establishment of Urban Policy Unit by the Peshawar Development Authority. But he said the province is lacking a proper urban resource centre to keep monitoring of various developmental schemes. He maintained the IAP and Carvan Tanzeem are going to establish a self-based urban resource centre that will hold records and details of various developmental projects executed in the provincial capital.
