ISLAMABAD - Raja Arshad, the main accused in the murder of Barrister Fahad Malik, the nephew of former chairman senate Muhammadmian Soomro, has been arrested by the law-enforcing agencies at Pak-Afghan border as he was escaping to the neighbouring country, said the FIA sources yesterday.

They said the accused was held by the FIA immigration authorities during a bid to slip into Afghanistan at Torkham border. He was also carrying a passport with valid visa for the United States, the sources added.

The suspect was first given into the custody of Tehsildar Torkham after which he was kept at Landi Kotal jail. He will now be transferred to Islamabad where he is facing murder charges.

The sources said that the accused’s name was put on the ECL soon after he along with six of his accomplices allegedly killed Barrister Fahad Malik in sector F-10 of the capital.

During interrogation the suspect revealed that he is a resident of Islamabad. The suspect is likely to make more confessions regarding how he reached the border despite strict checking on the way and his facilitators in Afghanistan.

It is to mention here that the accused had got transitory bail from Lahore High Court Multan Bench soon after the murder and was supposed to join investigation and appear before the trial court of Islamabad before expiry of the granted period.

The sources further said that the accused got one-month visa of Afghanistan from Afghanistan's Quetta consulate on August 24 and he was unaware that his name was on the ECL.

On the other hand, some days back, Islamabad police had also arrested Nauman Khokhar, another accused in the murder case of Fahad Malik. Additional Sessions Judge Pervaizul Qadir Memon had directed the police to arrest the accused after his interim bail was rejected.

The British-Pakistani citizen, Fahad Malik, was killed in the federal capital when the accused fired bullets on his car near the Shalimar police station where he had gone in his professional capacity to mediate a case between the two parties involving groups linked with Tariq Malik and duo Raja Arshed and Nauman Khokhar.

Talking to APP, a spokesman of Islamabad Police also confirmed the arrest of the main accused and said the border security forces arrested him at Torkham while trying to escape to Afghanistan.

During the investigation, Raja Arshad told the security forces that he had planned to move to United Kingdom from Afghanistan.

The interior ministry had already cancelled his passport and placed him on the Exit Control List.

Raja Arshad would be brought to Islamabad today (Monday), the spokesman said.

Interior Minister Chuadhry Nisar Ali Khan announced to give reward money of Rs 0.1 million to FIA personnel.

The minister will also give a certificate of appreciation to FIA ASI Shafique Azam, who arrested the accused.
