ISLAMABAD - About two dozens sitting MPS are likely to face criminal charges in the fake degree cases being processed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The Chief Election Commissioner has already referred nine cases to the DPOs for registration of FIRs against these MPs including MNAs, senators and MPAs for holding fake degrees, the ECP sources told The Nation on Tuesday. The sources said that 13 more MPs were likely to face the criminal cases as their cases were being finalised. As many as 60 sitting MPs have been accused of submitting fake/invalid degrees while filing their nomination papers in order to qualify for the legal requirement under the then law that people aspiring to hold public offices should have minimum qualification of B.A. But that law has been later repealed and as many 70 sitting MPs had contested bye-elections on the vacant seats under the new law which does not require B.A degree. The sources further said that out of sixty sitting MPs nearly two dozens were already facing legal cases in the courts, and the ECP did not touch cases as considering them a sub judice matter. They said that degrees of more than ten MPs were later declared valid during scrutiny process. However, the ECP was still waiting for the records of degrees of remaining MPs, as the Higher Education Commission (HEC) is yet to provide details of their degrees to the ECP. Meanwhile, the special scrutiny committee of the ECP headed by Senior Joint Secretary Muhammad Afzal Khan Tuesday continued hearing into cases of thirteen MPs.
