Fazl demands PMs resignation

ISLAMABAD - The chief of his own faction of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Tuesday, in a daring move, while intensifying the pressure on PPP-led coalition government demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. Terming Prime Minister as a threat to the democratic process in the country, Maulana said, The Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani should resign and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) should appoint his substitute. He made this demanded in a media briefing here on Tuesday. Wearing an orange turban, Fazlur Rehman urged President Asif Ali Zardari that the time had approached to take an appropriate action of removal of PM. Maulana alleged that PM was derailing the democratic process in the country and acting against the reconciliatory policy of PPP government. He (PM) has sabotaged the process of reconciliation among coalition partners and his actions have caused political instability in the country, he said. Maulana on the occasion termed his daring demand as need of the time saying if the ongoing political crises prolongs than it could derail the democracy. The government is under pressure and the President will have to take this step, Fazl urged. Bring a new Prime Minister. It is impossible for the democratic process to run if Gilanis remains in power, the JUI-F chief asked the incumbent government. He said premier Gilani had taken one-sided decision of sacking Azam Khan Swati from federal cabinet, which he said, was against the understanding between his party and government. He asserted that he is in touch with all the political parties regarding the current political scenario, however, added that he was expecting some big decision from MQM chief Altaf Hussain. He deplored the political situation in the country. We stick to our guns, but the problems facing the country cannot be resolved till the government does not take a solid step, Fazal maintained. However, to a question that whether JUI-F would rejoin the PPP-led coalition government after a change in PM House on his (Fazl) demand, he replied, There is no hope of it, however, JUI-F will made final decision in this regard after mutual consultation. Answering a question regarding law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Maulana said provincial ruling Awami National Party (ANP) had reached at a consensus that it (ANP) could not control the deteriorating law and order situation there and that is why the Army was present in KP province. Commenting on MQM announcement to quit federal cabinet, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said, though MQM decided to part away from government in centre, he was expecting complete boycott of MQM with PPP. However, he opined that recent negative remarks of PML-N Chief towards MQM might have forced the party not to join opposition. Answering a question about MQM-PML-N clash, he said that PML-N has got its own philosophy but it did target MQM first. Responding another question regarding his trip to Saudi Arabia, Fazl said that he is going to offer Umrah and added that his tour has nothing to do with Haj scandal or its investigation. Regarding the revival of MMA, JUI-F chief said, he was under consultation with all religious parties except Jamaat-e-Islami in this regard. Fazlur Rehman made the call just hours after the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the main coalition partner of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), announced that it was quitting the federal cabinet, although it would not join the opposition.
