ISLAMABAD The governments decision to enhance the strength and scope of Joint Investigation Team (JIT) of FIA, which is probing the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, is ostensibly aimed at including Senator Safdar Abbasi and Naheed Khan into the probe, The Nation learnt reliably. The Interior Ministry had included DIG (Operations) Bani Amin and SP Karachi, Rao Iftikhar, in the JIT as its new members through a notification, the other day. Both the police officers are considered as confidants of Interior Minister Rehman Malik. It was mind-boggling for every person what was the necessity or logic to enhance JIT at a time when the already constituted JIT had submitted the challan of the case before the ATC. The sources in the FIA said that the JIT under the new Terms of Reference (ToR) would question the former SSP and security officer of Benazir Bhutto, Major (Retd) Imtiaz Hussain, Senator Safdar Abbasi and Begum Naheed Khan as all were present in the Benazirs vehicle at the time of her assassination in a gun and bomb attack. All these persons including Begum Naheed Khan were never probed by any JIT in connection with the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. Major Imtiaz is now posted as DIG in Quetta. Furthermore, the JIT would probe former SSP (Operations) Rawalpindi, Yaseen Farooq. He has already remained under investigations. The Nation has learnt reliably that the JIT had got statement of Benazirs driver who was driving the vehicle at the time of her assassination. He in his statement said that Naheed Khan had opened the hatchet of the sunroof of the vehicle. This statement is being made as a base to include the two PPP leaders into the BBs assassination case. Major (Retd) Imtiaz Hussain was sitting on the front seat of Benazirs vehicle along with the driver at the time of her assassination in Liaquat Bagh. Benazir Bhutto was sitting on the rear seat of the vehicle while Makhdoom Amin Faheem was sitting on her left side and Naheed Khan on her right side. Khalid Shahanshah, Senator Safdar Abbasi and Razaq Merani were sitting behind Amin Faheem and Naheed Khan on the very rear seats of the vehicle.DIG (Operation) Islamabad, Bani Amin informed this scribe that he had got intimation letter from the Interior Ministry. On whether or not senior PPP leaders and others would be included into the investigations, he said that he had not read the new ToRs so far and was not clear about that.
