QUETTA - Convocation of Balochistan University of IT, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS) was held here in Quetta on Wednesday last, says a Press release.

A total of 626 graduates received degrees in various disciplines of study from the chief guest, Chancellor BUITEMS and Governor Balochistan, Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi while the first position-holders in respective categories were honoured with gold medals.

The highlight of the convocation, however, was conferment of honorary doctorate degree on Senator (Retd) Syed Faseih Iqbal, Editor-in-Chief of Daily The Balochistan Times and Daily Zamana, in recognition of his decades long services in the fields of journalism, public & social service and for the promotion of education.

It is worth mentioning here that Syed Faseih Iqbal is the pioneering Editor and publisher whose newspapers i.e. Daily Zamana (Urdu) and The Balochistan Times (English) are the oldest newspapers of the province with continuous publication of 64 years and 37 years respectively.

He has remained two-time President of All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) and six-time President of Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE).

He is the founding President of Pak-China Friendship Association Balochistan since 1973.

He has the distinction of being member of the Senate/Syndicate at three universities of Balochistan. He has always advocated improved higher education in Balochistan and given altruistic personal, professional, moral and advisory support to educational institutions.

He was elected as Senator for two consecutive terms in 1985-1988 and then 1988-1994. He chaired many Parliamentary Committees including Standing Committee for Information and Broadcasting; Sports, Culture and Tourism, and Youth & Women Affairs.

He made history by introducing Parliamentary Committees system in Pakistan after a thorough analysis of the system in the US.

He has been well decorated in recognition of his distinguished services in the fields of journalism, public & social service and education.

President of Pakistan conferred upon him Sitara-e-Imtiaz (SI) in the year 2005 and then the highest National Civil Award ‘Hilal-e-Imtiaz’ (HI) in 2010, both times in three disciplines simultaneously – journalism, public service and social service.

A good number of celebrated personalities from Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi were in Quetta on Wednesday to attend the 8th Convocation of BUITEMS in general and witness conferment of honorary doctorate degree on Senator (Retd) Syed Faseih Iqbal in particular.

Personal guests of Faseih Iqbal included the likes of former Federal Information Minister Javed Jabbar, former Sindh Minister Senator (Retd) Jam Karam Ali, Chairman Press Council of Pakistan, Justice (Retd) Shafqat Abbasi; Sarmad Ali, President All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS); Masood Hamid, Secretary General APNS and many others.

They all felicitated Syed Faseih Iqbal on conferment of honorary doctorate degree and lauded his decades long services for the province in all fields.  They also appreciated the discipline, energy and enthusiasm in the administration, faculty and students of BUITEMS and held that they were greatly inspired by the magnificient convocation ceremony.

Giving his comments on this occasion, Javed Jabbar said that he had known Syed Faseih Iqbal for about four decades and found him a man of mission.

He said that there were two aspects of being a Balochi, physical and spiritual and that Syed Faseih Iqbal led almost all in the spiritual aspect of being a Balochi, therefore, he was pleased to see services of Faseih Iqbal being recognised in the form of honorary doctorate degree which he truly deserved.

A large number of people from different walks of life, prominent political personalities, his colleague Senators, former Federal Ministers, Governors, provincial Ministers, and many others also congratulated Syed Faseih Iqbal on phone or through letters.

They included prominent journalist and Chairman Nazaria-i-Pakistan Trust Majid Nizami and former Governor Sindh Lt Gen (Retd) Moinuddin Haider.

In his felicitation message, Majid Nizami said that Syed Faseih Iqbal has always advocated stronger federation, strong federating units and rights of Baloch people while he has seen many ups and downs in his life but never retreated from his principled stance.

He appreciated the decision by BUITEMS to confer honorary doctorate degree to Faseih Iqbal in recognition of his decades long services and hoped that this decision will augment the sentiments of national service, harmony and integrity.
