ISLAMABAD – Pakistan hockey team lifted the coveted Asian Champions Trophy title after edging out arch-rivals India 5-4 in the final and with this victory green shirts also managed to take sweet revenge of their earlier loss to the same opponents in the group stage where India had beaten Pakistan 2-1.

Akhtar Rasool is proving lucky for hockey, as he has managed to get relatively better results during last one-month or so, as first Pakistan hockey team won bronze medal in the Champions Trophy held at Melbourne and now they had won the gold medal. Pakistan had beaten India on both occasions.

But Akhtar Rasool had to work really hard on improving the team's inconsistent performances and he must also keep a very close eye on the alarming amount of goals Pakistan defense has conceded and that too against much-weak opponents.

A major development in this tournament was witnessed that for the first time, green shirts had scored more goals and conceded less, as for the past many events, it was clearly witnessed that green shirts had scored very few and conceded much more.

Akhtar should focus on tightening things at the back. One major point of satisfaction for the team management is that now the team has started converting short corners into goals which is very positive and encouraging sign as after Sohail Abbas, the goals are very hard to come on short corners.

Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) must keep faith in the young blood, as they had absolved the pressure quite well and produced desired results in the Asian Champions Trophy.

The winning combination with the exception of one or two changes must be kept intact as the Hockey World Cup is fast approaching. The team management has time factor at their side and now the head coach should use all his vast experience and transformed the team into a winning unit.

The consistent performances will certainly boost the morale of not only the players but most importantly the entire nation which has lost faith in the national game. But after back-to-back improved results, hockey crazy fans start believing in the team and expectation level has once again returned. Now it is up to the federation and the team management especially the head coach to keep the momentum high and not let masses confidence shattered.

It is high time when former hockey greats should come forward and lend a helping hand to the federation and help the team in best possible way to remove their flaws.

It is the time when President and Prime Minister of Pakistan not only invite the gold medal winning squad but also announce cash awards for the entire team and management which will surely encourage the players, as they deserve appreciation from the highest offices of the country after playing their due part on the field.
