But Charli XCX has revealed that she was not always so self-assured after being bullied at school. The British songstress, whose song Fancy with Iggy Azalea was the smash hit of the summer, said she had a ‘nice upbringing’ in Bishop Stortford in Hertfordshire - apart from one girl who picked on her at school.
She told the Sunday Times' Style magazine: ‘It was this crazy girl - she was petrifying. I was scared to come to school. ‘That was when I was eight or nine. And then I had issues with the same girl when I was in my teens, and that could spew out on to Facebook.’ The 22-year-old said the experience left her wary of Facebook and said she would be stricter with her children than her parents were - making them write letters to friends rather than post messages online.
Charli, whose full name is Charlotte Aitchison, used a loan from her parents to record her first album when she was just 14. She toured the record around trendy east London warehouse parties which her parents devotedly ferried her to and from in their car. She was spotted and signed to a record label and achieved breakthrough success in 2012 when she co-wrote the song I Love It which became a hit for Swedish pop duo Icona Pop. She will release her next album, Sucker, on February 16 and she will be supporting Katy Perry on the European leg of her tour the same month.
