The dairy sector, despite its economic significance, has been a neglected sector in Pakistan. Some of the reasons, besides negligence of the previous governments, include poor technology, lack of institutional support, lack of grazing pastures. However the efforts of Small and Medium Enterprises Development (SMEDA) has taken a commendable initiative to attract small entrepreneurs to invest in the dairy sector and is conducting training programs for them in order to educate and train them about latest production and marketing techniques. I am hopeful that in a country like Pakistan, where more than 35 million people are involved in dairy farming, such an initiative will revive the dairy industry.
