MIRPUR (AJK) - The PPP activists and supporters observed the death anniversary of assassinated prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

Special congregations were held to observe the death anniversary of the top PPP icon. The speakers paid rich tributes to the departed leader for his meritorious service for the nation. They said that she gave supreme sacrifice of her life for maintaining national unity, solidarity and cohesion among the people of all the four provinces and AJK.

Quran Khawani was held at all the major cities and towns across AJK for the departed soul of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto in the special ceremonies held to observe her martyrdom anniversary. Senior leaders of PPP including members of AJK Legislative Assembly and AJK Council belonging to the party, office-bearers from the respective districts, and common public representing all classes of the society attended the special ceremonies.

Special gatherings of the workers and supporters of PPP AJK at all district and tehsil headquarters were held to celebrate the death anniversary of BB. They paid rich tributes paid to late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and his late daughter coupled with the renewal of the pledge to continue the mission of departed leaders of the party. Two-minute silence was also observed. In Mirpur, two separate ceremonies were held to observe the anniversary of late BB under the auspices of PPP Azad Kashmir Mirpur city unit. The local PPP leaders including Ghulam Rasool Awami attended the ceremony.

Speaking on these occasions, the PPP leaders described the assassination of Benazir as a huge loss to the entire nation and the people of Jammu & Kashmir. They said that Pakistani nation was deprived of the politician who preferred to die like her valiant father ZA Bhutto for the sake of protection of the rights of the people, national interests and democratic rule in the country.

The speakers said that late Benazir Bhutto emerged as the bravest and strongest lady of the region.

They said that BB had emerged as the symbol of complete national unity, integrity and harmony among all the four provinces of Pakistan. The AJK PPP leaders on the occasion vowed to continue the mission of Bhuttos in the greater national interest.

Kashmiri Journalist passes away

Veteran Kashmiri journalist and editor of a local Urdu daily Mumtaz Al Rai died here on Thursday after prolonged illness. He was 68.

Rai was bed-ridden since long and breathed his last Thursday morning.

He had a long distinguished career in the field of journalism, spread over four decades. He remained associated with various national Urdu dailies and periodicals at different stages of his journalistic career.

He was laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard in Mirpur. Hundreds of people from all walks of life including political and social organisations leaders, lawyers, journalists, intellectuals, human rights activists, members of the business fraternity attended the funeral.
