Bangladesh to elect new president February 16: official

Bangladesh's parliament will elect a new president next month, nearly a year and a half after the term of the current president Iajuddin Ahmed has expired, an official said Thursday. Election commission spokesman S.M. Asaduzzaman told a foreign news agency the country's newly elected members of parliament will vote for a new president -- largely a ceremonial position -- on February 16. The Awami League party, which won last month's parliamentary elections by a landslide margin, has already selected its senior official Zillur Rahman for the post.
