KARACHI - The funds of Greater Karachi Sewerage Plan S-III is continuously being delayed due to which one of the important projects of the City could not be initiated, sources said. The releasing of funds is under process in the provincial finance department, as PC-1 costing Rs7,982 million was approved by the ECNEC, The Nation has learnt. The status of total sewage generated in Karachi is 435 MGD, while the total capacity of sewage of KWSBs treatment is 151 MGD, but actually only 90 MGD is treated, sources said. The objective of the S-III project is to protect and improve environment conditions in City by enhancing the treatment facilities by maintaining ecological balance and sea front of Karachi city and to save the citizens from unhygienic environment and health related issues. It was proposed in S-III project Phase-1 that upgradation of existing sewage treatment plants and the existing 150 MGD sewage will be enhanced to 300 MGD and new sewage treatment plant at Korangi, Shah Faisal, Shorab Goth/ New Karachi and Mai Kolachi would be established. KWSB officials said that the features of the project were to construct sewage treatment plants at Korangi, Shah Faisal, Sohrab Goth, North Karachi and Mai Kolachi and up-gradation of existing STP-I, STP-II and STP-III. Extension of Lyari Interceptor upto North Karachi and constriction of new trunk sewers, construction of interceptors along both sides of Malir River, interconnection works of existing trunk sewers with Lyari and Malir interceptors. It is pertinent to note that the project has been approved by ECNEC and is scheduled to complete in 48 months. A joint venture of M/s Techno Consultant International (PAK), M/s Ws Atkins international (UK) and NEC (Pak) has been appointed as a consultant of the project. They are actively surveying the existing overall sewerage system and facilities, for the detailed design of the proposed works as per approved PC-1 of S-III project. But some hindrance is causing delay in the project such as 465 acres of land already allotted to KWSB and earmarked for Korangi Sewage Treatment Plant has not yet been cleared the title of land, further lands parcels, 50 acres of each identified for new sewage treatment plants at Shah Faisal Colony, Sohrab Goth and Mai Kolachi have not been allocated to KWSB despite the instruction of Chief Secretary Sindh. Sources in the Sindh government and KWSB confirmed that the fund releasing of the project is under process and all efforts are being made to release the funds and removed other hindrances so that the project could be initiated as soon as possible.
