Bandit beaten to death

KARACHI - In what may be termed as a reaction to the growing street crimes, an alleged bandit was beaten to death by an angry mob in the jurisdiction of the New Karachi Industrial Area Police Station on Saturday.
Three robbers were busy in looting passers-by in Sector 5-E near Nullah Stop. Residents of the area rushed to the spot, when they heard hue and cry and caught hold of two of the robbers, say witnesses. The third fled, however.
The mob started beating the two robbers and even threw them into a nullah. By the time police officials arrived, one of them died, while the other was stated to be in critical condition. Doctors at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital said they were severely tortured. According to them, the injured was not in a condition to record his statement. Reports say that over 200 people, most of them shopkeepers, attacked the bandits.
Although the police team came after 20 minutes, its involvement saved the robbers from being burnt alive.
Police officials said no weapon was recovered from them as the mob had claimed. However, a senior police official said that someone from the mob might have thrown these weapons into the drain.
SP Chaudhry Asad Ali further said that they would get statement of the injured dacoit to ascertain what actually happened.
The mob would be booked for taking law into its hands, added the officer.
