Robbers on the rampage

HAFIZABAD - Robbers went on the rampage in the district on Saturday night and killed a truck driver, snatched a bike from a citizen and deprived a teacher of his cash.
In the first incident, a driver of a rice-laden truck, heading towards Rasulnagar from Jalalpur Bhattian, was intercepted near Bhirri Chattha Morr by four unidentified armed bandits. The driver, Muhammad Hussain, did not stop and accelerated the speed instead. Upon this, the dacoits opened fired on him, killing him instantly. Police have registered a case and are investigating.
Separately, one Murtaza, on his way to Shori Manika village, was deprived of his bike by three armed dacoits. His cellphone and Rs3,000 cash were also taken away by them.
Separately, a schoolteacher, Khadam Hussain, of Peer Kalay Shah area was deprived of his Rs5,000 by three motorcyclists when he was going to offer fajar prayer. Police are investigating.
According to a survey conducted by this scribe, the performance of police in the district remains at an all-time low due to which dacoities, robberies and killings have surpassed all previous records.
No doubt that crime cannot be eliminated absolutely, but due police efforts could help decrease it to some extent. Criminals are becoming more active day-by-day and it seems that there is something wrong with the police administration here.
Elimination of crimes and criminals and ensuring protection to the masses are prime responsibilities of the police, but they have failed to step up their presence in the district.
