Quetta - Gunmen shot dead four policemen in an attack in Satellite Town of Quetta yesterday.
Police said armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on the cops while they were on routine patrolling in the provincial capital.
Two of them died on the spot while the other officers succumbed to their wounds later in hospital.
The attackers escaped and a search was under way to find them. Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack in an e-mail sent to RFE/RL (Radio Free Europe).
According to police sources, the attackers were riding a motorcycle and opened fire at the policemen who were on routine patrolling in the area. As a result, two policemen including Abdul Nafey and Inayatullah died on the spot while two received serious wounds on the spot.
The bodies and the injured were rushed to Combined Military Hospital (CMH), where the two injured also succumbed to their wounds. The dead bodies and injured were shifted to a hospital for legal formalities. After the incident, police and other law enforcement agencies cordoned off the entire area.
Balochistan is the scene of a low-intensity insurgency by nationalist and separatist Baloch groups, who want a share of revenue from gas and mineral resources and complete autonomy from Islamabad.
It’s also home to Taliban militants, drug smugglers, kidnapping rings and sectarian insurgents.
BLAST HIT RAILWAY TRACK
A major tragedy was avoided on Thursday as two bogies of Jaffar Express were partially damaged in an explosion near railway tracks in Mithri area of Sibi district. The Jaffar Express was travelling from Quetta to Lahore when the blast occurred destroying two feet of the Railway track. Railway service between Balochistan and other parts of the country was suspended as result of the blast. There was no loss of life reported. Rescue and security personnel reached the blast site.
TWO ‘TERRORISTS’ ARRESTED IN ZHOB
Frontier Corps and intelligence agencies on Thursday arrested two suspected terrorists during an operation here.
According to FC sources, the terrorists, who belonged to a banned outfit, were nabbed during a search operation conducted by the personnel of FC and intelligence agencies in Ismailzai area on a tip-off about their presence. They were shifted to an undisclosed place for investigation.
