ISLAMABAD (APP) The sp-ecial committee of the National Assemblys Public Accounts Committee Wednesday expre-ssed concern over awarding of a Rs 651 million contract by National Highway Authority (NHA) without rendering any tender. The meeting with Zahid Hamid in the chair reviewed the audit reports of the Ministry of Communications and Ministry of Postal Services, and expressed its dismay over such contracts due to which national exchequer had to bear losses of millions of rupees. The meeting was informed that CDWP also took strict notice of the contract and investigation was underway to bring the responsible to task. The committee directed the officials concerned to present a detailed report within a month. The audit officials told the committee that the NHA was a defaulter of Rs 0.9 million in context of non-payment of income tax upon which the chairman of the special committee asked the ministry to ensure transparency in its matters. Reviewing the audit reports of the Postal Services, the committee took note of the alleged embezzlement of Rs 0.7m and illegal construction of an additional building by the Post Master General Lahore which resulted in loss of Rs1.5m. The committee directed the officials of the ministry to submit a report within a period of one month and fix responsibilities.
