RAWALPINDI Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi Bench, on Wednesday, issued notices to Medical Superintendent (MS) of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed (BBS) hospital in response to a petition challenging termination of contractual workers of the hospital. LHC judge Justice Asad Munir directed MS of Benazir Bhutto Hospital to submit his written comments within three weeks of the petition filed by 70 hospital workers who were recently terminated. The petitioners counsel advocate, Manzoor Hussain Malik, informed TheNation that the court said that the workers should not be dismissed from their posts if they were working. Petitioners Arshad Mehmood and others, including ward boys, ward cleaners, lab assistants and junior clerks made Secretary health department Punjab and MS BBH respondents and maintained that they were terminated on July 24 without being given any opportunity of hearing. They maintained that the hospital administration terminated them saying they were inducted with out proper procedure and the posts were not advertised in the newspapers. It has further been stated by the authorities that the workers were overage and had the domiciles of other districts than Punjab. The sacked workers of the hospital stated that according to recent Supreme Court ruling, all contractual workers would be regularized after they had served for more than three years and many of them had been working in the hospital for over 10 years. They have pleaded the court to declare their termination unlawful and direct the BBH administration to allow them to continue their services.
