ISLAMABAD - The Social Services Wing of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has not be activated for the last eight months and even it did not establish any flood relief camp for the assistance of flood affected people, The Nation has learnt.
On the directions of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Co-Chairman and former President Asif Ali Zardari inaugurated the Social Services Wing in December 2014 in Lahore and appointed senior party leader Zamurd Khan as its chairman.
The PPP Social Services Wing collected the funds of thousand of rupees and sent several trucks of commodities for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in January, but it could not be activated in recent devastated flood. The PPP leadership just announced the visit of the chairman and co-chairman to flood-affected areas but it has not issued the schedule for their visits so far. Opposition Leader in National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah and other leadership of party followed their chairman line and they also did not bother to visit the flood-hit areas.
Sources in PPP informed this scribe that the basic aim behind the establishment of this wing was to focus on the welfare of the people who are living in far-flung areas of the country and to establish welfare camps for the help of disaster-hit people. The party leadership tasked Zamurd Khan to activate the Social Services Wing around the clock and provide the prompt response to affectees in situation of natural disasters and road accidents. The party provided enough funds and ambulances in this regard, sources added.
The sources said that unfortunately Zamurd Khan did not take the task seriously and he failed to attract the PPP volunteers and organise any awareness campaign and seminar for the membership enhancement of this wing, sources added.
Talking to the Nation, Zamurd Khan said that PPP was trying to activate the Social Services Wing and visit the flood-affected areas next week. He mentioned that he met Khurshid Shah on Tuesday and discussed present situation of social services wing. He said the meeting decided to establish the flood relief camps in different cities of the country.
He said that four ambulances of Social Services Wing were operational in Islamabad and these ambulances were parked in Sweet Homes.
Faisal Kareem Kundi, former deputy speaker of National Assembly, shared his views on the PPP Social Services Wing. However, he was unaware about the activities of the Social Services Wing. He mentioned that party appointed Zamurd Khan as head of the wing and provided ambulances, funds and office in central secretariat for the purpose. He said nobody contacted him yet for launching the relief activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He was very disappointed on the attitude of Zamurd Khan and he forced Zamurd to come forward and visit flood-hit areas along with provincial leadership. It was the responsibility of Zamurd Khan to collect information of damages and establish relief camps across the country for compensation of economic loss of affectees, he added. Faisal said Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto assured him that he would visit the flood-hit areas next week.
