GILGIT-The three-day Shandur Polo Festival is all set to start today (Friday) here at the world highest polo ground Shandur.

The governments of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been jointly arranging the event after four years, under the supervision of Frontier Constabulary (FC).

Director Sports Gilgit-Baltistan Hassan Ali hoped that the Shandur festival would be a huge success. “Shandur disputed is unresolved issue but need to organise jointly festival events. We have opportunity to show the world our rich culture. Some certain elements on both sides want to sabotage the event for personal gain but Frontier Constabulary played important role to make the event possible.”  Captain Chitral polo team Sikandar Malik told The Nation that they were thankful to provincial government of Gilgit-Baltistan for holding the event after a gap of four years. “There must be equal number of seats for both sides’ official and will be provided with same facilities for horses and players.”

The social activist have been opposing the events and wishing to sabotage it in Chitral but police check post is established on both sides of the area.

This game of kings has been played between Gilgit and Chitral teams since 1936 at the world’s highest polo ground Shandur. Thousands of foreign and local visitors enjoy the polo festival which is commencing from today (Friday) and will end on July 31.
