LAHORE - The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (Punjab Zone) has said that sufficient stocks of sugar are available in the country.

“When payments of sugarcane growers are cleared every year, the pressure of sale on sugar mills decreases due to which fluctuation in the prices of sugar is a normal phenomenon,” said a spokesman for the PSMA.

According to a statement issued here on Thursday, he said there was no contraction in the supply of sugar and mills were supplying sugar without hindrance.

“However, sometimes middlemen try to exploit the situation,” the spokesman said, and added, “Due to continuous increase in sugarcane prices cost of production of sugar has increased considerably, which comes to Rs64/65 per kg ex-mill.”

He said if mark up between March to July was taken into account then the ex-mill price of sugar could be calculated further high.
