MIRPUR (AJK) - At least 20 policemen including a station house officer (SHO) and a returning officer (civil judge) were injured in a violent attack by an unruly mob of the armed activists of PML-N AJK, protesting against rigging in polls in Nikayal town of Kotli District in Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, police said. The injured include Returning Officer LA-9 (Nikayal) Muhammad Shabir Chaudhry and SHO Nikaal Police Station Mirza Maqsood Ahmed, Superintendent Police Kotli Irfan Masood Kashfi told TheNation scribe over telephone from the trouble-ridden Nikayal, the home town of PML-N AJK Supremo and former Prime Minister of AJK Sardar Sikander Hayat Khan on Tuesday evening. The mob also set ablaze the official vehicle of the returning officer and afflicted sever damage to some official buildings on court premises in Nikayal, besides ransacking the shops and business centres belonging to rival political persons in the town, the SP said adding, the situation has been brought under full control by the law enforcement agencies this afternoon. Giving details of about hours-long incidents of loot and arson by the miscreants allegedly belonging to Pakistan Muslim League-N, SP Irfan Kashfi said the PML-N had announced to hold a peaceful protest rally in Nikayal on Tuesday against the alleged rigging in the constituency in June 26 polls which led to the defeat of the PML-N candidate Sardar Farooq Sikander, son of the PML-N AJK top leader Sardar Sikander Hayat Khan, at the hands of the PPP-AJK candidate Javed Badanvi. The district police chief said that the PML-N protesters later became furious and stormed the shops and business centres of the people belonging to the rival political parties in Nikayal bazaar. The uncontrolled mob looted and ransacked the shops and other private properties including the office of a rival political party during the demonstration. Later, at about 12:30 pm, the mob rushed the sub division courts premises where they set on fire various public buildings, besides torching the official vehicle of the returning officer of the constituency. Niakayal Police Station sources said the enraged mob also resorted to aerial firing besides attacking Returning Officer Shabir Chaudhry and SHO Niakayal Mirza Maqsood who were discharging their official duties. Protesters also pelted stones and bricks on other cops from different sides of the severe hilly terrain of Nikayal. The ruthless stoning by the uncontrolled mob on the policemen, ransacking and manhandling of the returning office and the staff led to injuring an RO who is also the civil judge, besides wounding about 20 policemen including SHO of the area. The condition of the injured cops and other officials was stated to be stable. Heavy additional police contingents were called in the town from rest of Kotli district to bring the situation under control, the SP said adding, the situation was under control till Tuesday afternoon. Police are after the miscreants involved in attack on the private and public property and the officials, and allegedly guilty of hooliganism, looting and arson. No arrest could be made till evening. A case has been registered against the miscreants involved in looting and arson and injuring the officials, police said.
