LAHORE The Capital City Police Officer Ahmed Raza Tahir is struggling hard to keep his job following the Lahore High Court Chief Justice expressed reservations over his appointment, directing the government not to overlook his record. Well-informed sources in the Police Headquarters Punjab revealed here on Tuesday that a strong lobby in the ruling PML-N in Punjab has managed to convince the chief minister to give him another chance. Sources said that the Inspector General of Police Punjab Javed Iqbal is also pressing the senior officer to improve their performance and show tangible results. The IGP is himself monitoring the over all crimes situation and the performance of the top officers serving in big cities, a police source disclosed to this reporter, requesting his name not to be mentioned. Sources said that the Punjab Police Chief Javed Iqbal while chairing an official meeting at the headquarters the other day, warned the senior officers that he did not believe in crimes statistics. The IGP strictly directed the officers to control crimes and bring tangible change at the gross root level rather than presenting 'official statistics to satisfy him during the meetings, being held to review the crime situation in the province. Sources also added that the IGP would brief the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif about the over all crimes situation and performance of the police department very soon as the officials in the police headquarters are monitoring the police performance at district, divisional and regional levels. On June 14 last, the Chief Justice LHC while holding a suo moto hearing over the killing of a 23-year-old youth, Shahbaz Butt, who was gunned down in a fake police encounter in Nishtar Colony area, had expressed reservations over the appointment of Ahmed Raza Tahir. The CJ noted that the CCPOs statements had caused anxiety among the citizens. I do not want to remove the CCPO but the government should not overlook his (previous) record, the CJ remarked. Meanwhile, according to an official handout issued on Tuesday, the CCPO Ahmad Raza Tahir has directed the City Police to take stern action against the big fish rather than going after only the small ones. According to the police spokesman, in order to ensure a positive change at police station level six 'Reporting Centers are being setup in different parts of the City on the directions of the CCPO, where the citizens can get their FIRs registered without any hindrance. Police sources claimed that the CCPO has also directed the officers to come out in the field to redress the genuine grievances of the public and to keep a check on the performance of the policemen at the police station level. The CCPO has also ordered the officers to expedite the submission of challans in the courts and ensure merit-based investigations of the crimes cases. He has also warned that any police officer found involved in corruption, misuse of power or negligence would be not be spared. Sources also added that the CCPO is taking multiple initiatives to improve the working of the Lahore police in order to keep himself in the good books of the IGP and the chief minister as well.
