KARACHI -Eight people were gunned down in various violent incidents while law-enforcement agencies claimed to have killed an alleged gangster in an encounter during targeted operation in Lyari.

Tension in Lyari and surrounding areas flared up again when gunmen riding motorbikes sprayed bullets in Khajoor Market area of Kharadar.

Witnesses said that at least two dozen motorcyclists came and resorted to indiscriminate firing, killing a mother of two children, 35-year-old Fatima Bibi, a water supplier, Fazal, 38, and Faisal, 36, and wounded nine others, including Amjad, Faisal, Shahab, Saleem, Ali, Ahmed, Fareedullah, Imran and Obaid.

The criminals managed to flee while victims were rushed to Civil Hospital, Karachi where doctors pronounced the death of three while admitted rest.

In reaction of the killing, residents and shopkeepers of the area gathered at the Merewether Tower and staged protest. They also set tyres on fire and pelted the passing vehicles with stones.

The traffic was suspended that caused massive traffic jam on II Chundrigar Road, Sharah-e-Liaquat, Maripur Road and MA Jinnah Road. Protesters also shouted slogans against the Lyari gangsters, outlawed Peoples Amman Committee and government. They demanded stern action against the gangsters.

Protesters said they daily found the bodies. Khurram Memon, resident of Kharader, said that at least 20 people were abducted and killed in last week only.

Meanwhile, extra contingent of law enforcers reached the spot to disperse the protesters.

Police said that the assailants moved to Macchar Colony from Kharader where they killed two more people belonging to Katchi community. They were identified as Saleem Hussain and Abdul Rehman.

Later, the gunmen opened indiscriminate firing at Katchi community dominated area, injuring Saeeda Bibi, Umer Kutchi, Ahmed Shah and Usman. In another incident of firing in Rexer Line area, Lyari, gunmen sprayed bullets on public bus which left two more people wounded. Earlier, gangsters threw three mutilated bodies form different areas of Lyari, including a body was found from Mirza Adam Khan Road, KH Road and Aghra Taj Colony.

After the killing of eight people, law enforcers claimed to have started targeted operation in Lyari and killed an alleged gangster, Saqib aka Boxer after an exchange of fire.

On the other hand, Kharadar Police have registered an FIR 243/13 on the complaint of injured Faisal against Lyari gangsters, Saqib boxer, Wasi Lakho, Ayaz Baloch, Sunny, Sheraz Comrade, Umer Katchi, Sarwar Baloch and their unidentified accomplices.
