ISLAMABAD - The Supreme Court on Monday directed chief secretaries of Balochistan and Sindh to accelerate repairing embankments damaged in the last years devastating floods. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and comprising Justice Mohammad Sair Ali and Justice Ghulam Rabbani was hearing a suo moto case of the breaches in embankments. The Chief Justice took suo moto on the letters of Deputy Chairman Senate Mir Jan Muhammad Jamali and Fakhruddin G Ibrahim, senior advocate Supreme Court, while PML-Q MNA Marvi Memon and Zahida Thebo Mehar have filed the petitions. According to the interim report of the Flood Commission, which was submitted at the SC last week, mentioned that the irrigation infrastructure in Balochistan province had badly suffered in the devastating floods. The Flood Commission was formed under the directives of Supreme Court. The Commission comprised on retired federal and provincial secretaries including A K Lodhi from Sindh, Fateh Khan Fajak from Balochistan, Khawaja Zaheerud Din from Punjab and Azam Khan from Khyber Pukhtunkhawa, while Qazi Sajid Additional Registrar of Supreme Court of Pakistan was appointed as facilitator of the commission. The chief secretaries of Balochistan and Sindh have been ordered to rehabilitate Kirthar Canal and other water supply sources, and submit progress report at the SC registrar office for the perusal. The chief justice said that the interim report of Commission suggested accelerating repair of bunds. He said that the water is the main concern of Balochistan and Sindh farmers and that should be made available to them so that they could cultivate their lands in time. The court observed that the Commission in its interim report has not pointed out whether the breach in Tori bund was deliberate? The reports in media are not based on correct facts, the chief justice said. Marvi Memon, the main petitioner, stated that the IDPs were facing numerous problems; as they have not been provided appropriate facilities yet. She said no steps have been taken for the timely plantation of Kharif crop.
