KARACHI – Sindh Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (r) Zahid Qurban Alvi has assured that facilities will be provided to persons performing duties in administering anti-polio drops to children.

Sindh Inspector General Police and Sindh Rangers Director General will be directed to provide necessary security and protection to anti-polio teams.

At a meeting with National Chair, Pakistan Polio Plus Committee led by Aziz Memon regarding measures to eradicate Polio from Sindh province, held at CM House.

The meeting was also attended by Sindh Health Secretary Dr Noshad Ahmed Shaikh, EPI Project Director Khamisani, Dr Salah Tumsah, Polio team leader WHO, Jalal Shaikh (Rotary) and Masood Hamed Bhalli (Rotary), Akhtar Alvi, Khalid Latif and others.  The Caretaker Chief Minister said that Polio is very dangerous disease and it is our responsibility to make concerted efforts for eradication of Polio from society. Qaim assured the participants that provincial government will fully support and cooperate and will provide necessary security and complete protection to the teams engaged in performing duties and administering anti-polio drops to children.

The meeting was informed that there are only three countries of Algeria, Indonesia and Pakistan, where polio still existing. It was also informed that Sukkur has been declared as polio is free area while there are only two places of Gadap (Karachi) and Hyderabad, where still there are causes of polio.

It was informed that once there was the population of 50,000 people in Gadap which has rapidly increased up to 4.5 million people and hygienic conditions there are very bad due to open drains and garbage dumps. It was informed that after recent polio campaign, the next anti-polio campaign is being held in Karachi Division particularly in Gadap and also in Hyderabad from April 5-7.

The meeting was further informed that due to migration of people from one place to other, the germination of polio is increased. He added that deputy commissioners are controlling authorities of respective districts for anti-polio campaign.

Alvi further said that committees be represented with various personalities and committees. He added that a representative committee for Gadap area be constituted comprising people of all communities.
