ISLAMABAD - The Finance Ministry Thursday finally moved a summary to Caretaker Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso for sacking Deputy Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Ashraf Mahmood Wathra on the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Rana Assad Amin, advisor and spokesperson to the Finance Ministry, has confirmed to The Nation that ministry has moved a summary to Prime Minister for the removal of Deputy Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Ashraf Mahmood from his post. Sources said Ashraf Mahmood would be removed when prime minister will approve the summary.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) a few days back directed the Finance ministry to remove Ashraf Mahmood Wathra from the post of Deputy Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), as he was appointed after the commission had imposed ban on the appointments. The ECP found the appointment of Deputy Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) a violation of its ban on fresh recruitments.

Earlier, the ministry had sought three days’ time for consultations and then categorically stated that it would not de-notify Wathra’s appointment. The finance ministry said in its reply to ECP that appointment had been made in accordance with the law and in consultation with the SBP governor after Wathra had met the required criteria. Arguing the ECP, the finance ministry wrote back that the appointment of deputy governor was not politically motivated.

However, the reply of Finance ministry did not satisfy the Election Commission of Pakistan, as it set 24 hours deadline to remove Deputy Governor State Bank of Pakistan from his post. Therefore, the Finance ministry on Thursday has finally moved a summary to Caretaker Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso for sacking Deputy Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Ashraf Mahmood Wathra on the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
