ISLAMABAD - Pakistan's Davis Cup bid against Philippines got a huge boost as Samir Iftikhar is all set to join Pakistan team in Manila on March 31 or April 1. The reliable sources in the PTF confirmed to The Nation on Friday that the hectic efforts by the PTF to get Samir release for important Davis Cup tie finally bore fruit as University of New Mexico (UNM) head coach Alan Dils allowed Pakistani lad to represent his country against Philippines.  But the PTF is now in a fix as visa for Aisam is yet to be obtained because Philippine embassy in Islamabad has made it clear that they would issue visa only if Aisam personally appeared while on the other hand, Aisam is not willing to come to Islamabad and insisting that the PTF should arrange visa for him as it is PTF’s responsibility to arrange visa for top national player. A PTF official told this scribe that efforts were still going on to somehow arrange visa for Aisam without his appearance. “We are quite hopeful that we will arrange visa for Asiam by 31st (Monday) and he will join the team well before the start of the tie,” he claimed.

Samir is all set to represent Pakistan in the Davis Cup tie. It means M Abid have to make way for Samir, which is a grave injustice to the young lad, who is currently Pakistan No 3. Everybody is fully aware of the fact that Aisam doesn't want to play singles as he prefers doubles only just like he did in the last tie against Vietnam.
