According to the Newsweek magazine dated, the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), the equivalent of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), has accumulated enormous wealth, by putting the doctors to re-certification test, every one decade and charging them exorbitant fees. The office-holders of ABIM have also become enormously rich, by receiving lavish salaries and extraordinary perks and privileges. This situation has riled the US doctors’ community so much that they have created a parallel, recertification body called “National Board of Physicians & Surgeons,” whose fees are very low and terms of recertification are very lenient. This new Board is likely to replace the cruel ABIM soon.
Our PMDC is also following in the footsteps of the ABIM in cruelty. It not only charges fees ranging from Rs.500 to Rs.1500 per year from each Pakistani doctor , but also requires them to attend refresher classes of 50 to 100 hours, at institutions located only in three cities of the country, which further enrich the PMDC. The PMDC is owned solely by the government and nobody can raise a voice against the excesses committed by it. It is good to have refresher courses but should not be monopolized by the PMDC.
Every DHQ Hospital should be allowed to hold the refresher courses and the PMDC fees should be abolished. In any case all the doctors do continue to study new medical developments throughout their lives by dint of their habit and also because they will lose their clientage if they do not keep up to date.
