LAHORE – Dacoits forced their entry into a jewellery shop situated in the North Cantonment police area in broad daylight on Monday and fled away after snatching gold ornaments worth Rs7.5 million, police sources said.

Eyewitnesses told the police that gunmen stormed into a jewellery shop situated in Saddar Bazaar, held up the jeweller at gunpoint and started looting. As the shop owner, later identified as Naveed, offered resistance, the bandits shot at and wounded him and fled away after snatching 2.5 kg gold ornaments worth Rs7.5 million.

The injured was rushed to a local hospital. The police are investigating with no arrest made so far. This daylight light robbery is said to be the sixth armed robbery at a jewellery shop during the past seven days. The police have so far failed to trace the gangs involved in such incidents.

Meanwhile, a 60-year-old man was recovered dead from the canal in Nawab Town area on Monday, police said. The police investigators said that the dead body of a man, yet to be identified, was floating in the canal as they reached the spot. Some passers-by spotted the body and contacted the police by phone.

It was not clear whether the old man was killed by someone or he drowned in the canal accidentally, though there were visible torture marks on the body parts. The police have removed the body to the morgue for autopsy and are investigating.
