Academia's role on disaster management highlighted

ISLAMABAD - In order to develop understanding of disaster management systems of Pakistan, sensitizing and building capacity of students and academia on disaster prevention and management, the Department of Governance and Public Policy (G&PP) arranged a lecture on  "Disaster Management system in Pakistan" at the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) on Wednesday.
Speaking at the occasion, Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Maj Gen (R) Muhammad Saeed Aleem, highlighted the comprehensive disaster management strategy in Pakistan and determined the roles and responsibilities of relevant ministries and authorities to disaster management and mitigation. He also underscored the important role of provincial and district governments in managing various disasters since he believed that disaster management was now a "devolved subject" and both provincial and district governments have key and profound role in managing disasters effectively. He said that role of academia was immense in generating academic debate and endeavoring to build capacity, impart training and to developing necessary skills of the concerned  persons with regard to assessment methodology and its utilization for effective disaster risk reduction.
