Islamabad-Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmed has said the commission will establish more campuses of the newly established University of FATA in each agency of the tribal area.
He stated this while talking to the FATA parliamentarians in the headquarters of HEC yesterday.
Dr Mukhtar Ahmed told the lawmakers about the undertaken efforts of HEC to advance higher education in the tribal area. He said that scholarships were being awarded to students of the Federal Administrative Tribal Areas (FATA).
The chairman said that classes in the University of FATA have been started and Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will formally inaugurate the university on December 05. He said Rs1.25 billion have been approved for the project.
Dr Mukhtar said that earlier there was a disagreement among the FATA MPs on the site for establishing the university. However, he said, the HEC proposed the site in Dara Adam Khel where 266 kenals land has been allocated for the university.
“HEC will establish campuses of the university in each tribal agency as every student of FATA could not have access to the main campus,” he added.
He said that allocation of land for the university was the problem for the HEC but the political representative played an important role in identification of land in the area. He said the commission will soon initiate work on establishment of campuses.
The chairman said that faculty members’ hiring in the terror-hit region is also an issue but the HEC was encouraging academicians of the tribal area to serve in FATA University.
“HEC also had made arrangements for Internally Displaced People (IDPs) students for their admission in other institutions during military operation,” he added.
He said that the HEC was committed to ensuring development of FATA through increased access of tribal students to higher education.
“So far 6,633 FATA students have benefited from the Prime Minister’s Fee Reimbursement Programme for MPhil and PhD studies, while 2750 students from FATA have been awarded scholarships under the HEC’s programme for undergraduate and postgraduate students,” Dr Mukhtar said.
MP from South Waziristan (SW), Mohammad Jamalud Din said in the meeting that students from South Waziristan suffered more because of law and order situation and HEC must address their issues on priority basis.
The MPs also stressed to follow the merit while hiring faculty members, lower staff and awarding scholarships to students of FATA.
“HEC should give priority to the students of FATA who has passed secondary and high education grades from the tribal region,” said MP Alhaj Shah Jee Gul Afridi.
