KARACHI - Provincial Health Secretary Dr Fazlullah Pechuho has said telemedicine projects in our country will not only help in improving rural healthcare, but also improve quality of care all over Sindh.

He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of Paediatric Emergency Room telemedicine site supported by Child Life Foundation at Sindh Government Hospital, New Karachi.

“Public-Private partnership in health sector will pave the way for the inclusion of state-of-the-art facilities that will provide medical treatment to children in critical condition,” he added.

Inauguration of this technology will also help achieve objective of the health policy. We have been striving for protecting peoples against chronic diseases, providing and upgrading modern health facilities and ensuring a dynamic health sector, he concluded.

Sindh Government Hospital New Karachi MS Dr Asif Zaman Khan said that this project will set the precedent for future telemedicine sites in other districts of Sindh. Telemedicine is the most effective and efficient source of providing treatment to children 24 hours of the day. This centre will set an example that how latest technology can be utilized for providing medical treatment and quality services to save the lives of the children. It is an honour for us that we are the part of this life saving campaign which will serve the community.

Dr Ahson Rabbani, CEO Child Life Foundation said that Child Life is committed to the provision of quality healthcare for children across Pakistan. A high definition camera is installed in the Children’s Emergency Room, and a senior doctor provides decision support from a central location at the Head office.

Through virtual rounds, the senior doctor can monitor individual patients and provide expert consultation for their treatment on request by the on-ground staff. Going forward, Child Life plans to replicate its Telemedicine model in the government hospitals in rural districts of Sindh, as it is accessible, affordable, and provides high quality patient care.

Child Life Foundation is a not-for profit organization committed to the delivery of quality urgent medical care to children. Child Life began its operations in October 2011 by renovating the paediatric ER at Civil Hospital, Karachi. 

In May 2013, Child Life Foundation was invited by the administration of National Institute of Child Health to support their paediatric ER.

In June 2016, Child Life’s third paediatric ER at Sindh Government Hospital Korangi-5 became operational. To-date, Child Life Foundation’s three emergency rooms have treated more than 1.6 million children free of cost. The current Telemedicine program at these three ERs results in saving at least one additional life per hour.
