City fortified on Hillary's arrival

LAHORE - Due to the intended special visit of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the City on Thursday (today), the top bosses of the police department and intelligence agencies here on Wednesday in a high-level meeting finalised and reviewed all the security arrangements made in the provincial metropolis. As per details, more than a thousand extra police officials have been deployed at 130 sensitive points on the confined three routes - Airport to Girja Chowk, Girja Chowk to Governors House, and Governors House to Government College University (GCU). The said three routes have also been sealed besides the deployment of 30 additional personnel of Special Branch and 30 officials of intelligence agencies at the most sensitive points on these routes. Six police rooftops have also been constituted regarding this sensitive issue. Sniffer dogs from Special Branch will also check the routes before the arrival of the guest. A police source disclosed that 450 security officials had been deputed at various points from Airport to Girja Chowk, while 300 officials would perform their duties from Girja Chowk to Governors House, and at least 250 officials would take this responsibility from Governors House to GCU. The meeting was attended by CCPO Muhammad Pervez Rathore, Additional Inspector General of Special Branch Saqlain Naqvi, CID Additional Inspector General Malik Iqbal, SSP (Operations) Ch Shahfiq Ahmad and other high officials of the police and intelligence departments. Talking to The Nation, SSP Ch Shafiq Ahmad said that a joint strategy would be adopted by the mutual consultations of security agencies. He said that sufficient contingents of trained police officers had been deputed at sensitive points. He further said that he himself had reviewed the security measures and inspected all the routes from point to point after the end of the meeting on Wednesday. He said that all the officials deputed especially for this purpose had been briefed about their responsibilities and strictly had been directed to remain vigilant while discharging their duties. A large number of plain-clothes police officials armed with sophisticated weapons have also been deputed, he added. Earlier, the SSP also checked the rehearsal of precautionary measures taken for the arrival of US Secretary of State. It is worth mentioning here that all the educational institutions including schools, colleges and varsities in the provincial metropolis have already been closed down owing to security concerns while security had been tightened in the City in the wake of Peshawar suicide attack on Wednesday.
