LAHORE - Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has directed his health squad to fight against dengue. “Dengue will be defeated again. No negligence will be tolerated in adopting precautionary measures. The departments concerned and elected representatives should work round the clock,” the chief minister said addressing lawmakers, officials, medics through a video conference from London on Monday.

He issued directives to provide best treatment facilities to dengue patients in hospitals. He also directed that an effective public awareness campaign be launched regarding preventive measures against dengue.

The chief minister said that all government departments and elected representatives would have to remain alert and play an effective role for eliminating dengue virus with the cooperation of masses.

He said the Punjab government launched a comprehensive campaign last year and controlled dengue. He stressed the need for evolving an effective strategy this year as well on the pattern of 2012 and taking practical measures in the affected areas so that this problem could be controlled. Shahbaz Sharif constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Provincial Minister Rana Sanaullah and directed the committee to meet at 8.00am daily to review dengue situation in the province and to adopt effective measures in this regard.

He said that besides provincial level, meetings should also be held at local level in the affected areas of Lahore, Rawalpindi, Sheikhupura and other areas for dealing with this scourge.

The Chief Minister directed elected representatives as well as officers of concerned departments to ensure their presence in the meetings on dengue and warned that the elected representatives not participating in these meetings would be held accountable. He said that despite being on a foreign visit, he is personally reviewing dengue situation and would continue to hold video conferences and issue instructions in this regard.

He said that elected representatives should play an effective role for eradication of dengue virus and monitor the performance of administrative machinery. Shahbaz Sharif said that he is deeply grieved over the death of a woman due to dengue and an inquiry has been ordered into the incident. He directed elected representatives and administration to launch a vigorous campaign against dengue with national spirit and surveillance work should be further accelerated. He said that besides government hospitals, best medical facilities should also be ensured for dengue patients in private hospitals and they should be provided best treatment in the special wards set up for this purpose. He said that no negligence or dereliction of duty would be tolerated in the drive against dengue. The Chief Minister directed concerned departments to ensure full implementation of the plan devised for eliminating dengue and spare no effort in curbing this menace.
