ISLAMABAD - China Red Cross has donated ten million rupees for the relief assistance of earthquake victims, as a gesture of goodwill to the people of Pakistan at the difficult time.

Chinese Ambassador, Sun Weidong handed over the donation cheque to Pakistan Red Crescent Chairman Dr Saeed Elahi here on Wednesday at the PRC National Headquarters.

In his brief remarks on the occasion, Ambassador Sun said that the Chinese Government and the people stand with their Pakistani brothers in this hour of need.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed his grief over the natural calamity that caused loss of precious lives.

In his message of condolence to President Mamnoon Hussain, Xi said that China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic partners of cooperation and the Chinese people also feel the pains of the Pakistani people in the face of the disaster.

China is prepared to provide assistance to Pakistan if needed, he added. He expressed the belief that the government and the people of Pakistan will overcome the aftermath of the disaster and rebuild their homelands, reports Chinese media.

Chinese President, Premier and Foreign Ministers have sent messages of condolence to their Pakistani counterparts to express sympathy to the victims. The Chinese leadership has also expressed solidarity with Pakistan at this moment, he added.

President Xi also sent a condolence message to Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, stating China and Afghanistan share a traditional friendship and the Chinese people are saddened by the losses of life and property in Afghanistan in the earthquake.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang said the Chinese government is prepared to assist Pakistan with disaster relief at its request.

Lu Kang expressed deep condolence with the earthquake’s hit families in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Dr Saeed Elahi thanked the ambassador for their generous support and hoped that the donation would help in alleviating the sufferings of the victims.

China has always been on forefront helping the people of Pakistan at the time of such calamity. It was the first country during 2005’s earthquake, providing huge support to Pakistan in rescue and relief operation. China always stood with Pakistan in the hour need and showed generosity in helping the affected people, said a senior Pakistani official while commenting on the statement of Chinese foreign office.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Red Cross Society of China always remained in the forefront to support the PRCS in provision of relief items and healthcare during the major disasters be it the earthquake 2005, floods 2010-2011,2013 and 2014.
