PESHAWAR - Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Senator Sirajul Haq has announced Rs 200 million for relief and rehabilitation of the earthquake affectees.

He urged upon the Federal government and provincial govt to jointly launch rehabilitation projects on war-footing basis.

Before leaving for a visit of earthquake affected areas of Buner, Swat, Dir, Chitral districts and Bajaur agency, addressing a news conference on Wednesday here at party provincial headquarter Al-Markaz Islami, Siraj said that about 4520 JI workers and its affiliated Al-Khidmat Foundation volunteers were busy in the relief and rehabilitation activities in the earthquake affected areas.

He said that it was a national tragedy and that's why JI started collecting donations from philanthropists.

Flanked by JI Provincial Ameer Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, he informed that the philanthropists and well-wishers of Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi and other cities extended donations with open heart for the earthquake affected people.

"We have purchased tents of Rs 4.7 million, tent sheets of Rs 3.850 million, food packages of Rs 1.6 million and sleeping beds and blankets of Rs 1.250 million. Initially we started relief work from Rs 30 million in the affected areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and FATA.”

He also said that 53 ambulances of Al-Khidmat Foundation were taking part in relief operation in the affected parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA.

He appealed to the nation to come forward and extend their support to earthquake-affected brothers, as it needs more support than that earlier extended to the affectees of Kashmir and Balakot in 2005 earthquake.

Siraj said that JI categorised Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in three zones aimed to carry out relief and rehabilitation operation in the affected areas.

Senior Minister Inayatullah Khan will monitor relief and rehabilitation operation in Dir Upper and Chitral districts where party respective MPAs, district Nazims and other locally elected representatives and party local Ameers will assist him.

Similarly, Minister for Finance Muzafar Said will monitor relief work in Dir Lower, where party respective MPAs and district, tehsil Nazims and party office bearers will assist him, while Minister for Zakat and Ushr, Habibur Rahman will supervise relief activities in Buner, Swat and Shangla districts.

The JI Ameer said that the government departments have their own procedure in which a lot of time is wasted while the affectees don't have shelter in the extreme cold climate. They are in dire need of tents, sleeping beds and blankets, he added.

"If Prime Minister in normal situations goes to the US for donation, then now there is no shame in accepting relief from international community," he said. The Federal government and provincial government should jointly work instead of making separate announcements, as announcing Rs 1,20,000 financial assistance for reconstruction of one room is impossible. The President,Prime Minister and Chief Minister should reconstruct all the destroyed houses like they are reconstructing their own destroyed houses, he added.

Sirajul Haq also appealed to the Ulema to appeal to the masses in the upcoming Jumma sermons to tender apology before the Almighty Allah for their wrong doings and protection from repeated natural calamities upon the country.
