islamabad - Vice Chancellor Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU) has requested the Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) to search for the new head of the institution, an official said on Saturday.

VC SZABMU Prof Dr. Javed Akram remained a hard target for the administration and employees of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) hospital.

The hospital employees considered his personality a major hurdle in separating the PIMS from the SZABMU.

The official said that VC SZABMU in a letter written to the secretary CADD asked to initiate the process of searching a new VC as the procedure will take months for finalisation of the candidate.

The SZABMU and PIMS are at loggerhead over controlling the administrative affairs of the hospital since their merging in 2013.

Both institutions were merged through an act of parliament during the previous government. The SZABMU was the first public sector medical university in the federal capital established four years ago and Prof.Dr Javed Akram was appointed its first VC.

As per the letter available with The Nation, the VC asked the secretary CADD for the induction of new VC.

The letter stated: “As you are well aware that my four years tenure as VC of SZABMU PIMS expires on January 6, 2018. I humbly request you to kindly initiate the process of induction of the new VC through the search committee as the process normally takes about 3-4 months to complete”.

PIMS employees went on 25 days long strike suspending the routine medical services and demanded the immediate separation of hospital from the university.

The employees raised concerns that merging of hospital with the university is damaging their civil service structure and they will be left with no choice of joining the university. During the protest, the VC SZABMU was also forced out from his office and manhandled him by the protestors.

After the federal cabinet approved the amendment in the draft of SZABMU bill to separate the hospital from the university this week, the employees ended their strike on the guarantee given by Minister of State for CADD Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry.

The minister assured the employees that he would make full efforts to pass the bill of separation in upcoming session of the parliament.

The minister had also accused the VC SZABMU and administrator PIMS of blame game and did not take responsibility of smoothly running the administrative affairs of the hospital. The minister had also stated that it was impossible to run one department from two offices.

Talking to The Nation, VC SZABMU Prof. Dr. Javed Akram confirmed about the development and said the concerned ministry has been approached to search for the VC.

He said that the letter was written in August because the new appointment would be made on the recommendations given by the search committee.

He said in his four-year tenure, the SZABMU was made the country’s best medical university. Secretary CADD Nargis Ghaloo while talking to The Nation said that the procedure for the search of new VC would be initiated after the names for search committee would be finalised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). She said that HEC has been officially requested for the selection of search committee.
