LAHORE -  Sherwood emerged as title winners in the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital-sponsored Polo in Pink 2017 event after routing Guard Group 8-3 in the final played here at the Lahore Polo Club ground on Saturday.

The final started with Sherwood having two goals handicap advantage which was further enhanced by Shahzad Aziz, who struck a field goal to make it 3-0 while Guard Group’s Taimur Ali Malik converted a 40-yard penalty successfully to reduce the deficit to 3-1. Sherwood then dominated the second chukker as they displayed quality polo skills and thwarted tremendous three goals – one each by Shahzad Aziz, Adnan Jalil Azam and Faisal Khokhar to stretch their lead to 6-1. Taimur Ali Malik then took the possession of the ball and banged in the goal to further reduce the lead to 6-2.

The third chukker was evenly poised as one goal each was scored by both the sides. From Sherwood, Frasat Ali Chatha was the goal scorer who converted the goal successfully while Mian Hussain Iftikhar contributed one in Guard Group’s total tally. The score at the end of the third chukker was 7-3. In the fourth and last chukker of the final, both the teams tried their best to score more and more goals but only Frasat Ali Chatha remained successful in hammering a goal which further strengthened Sherwood’s lead to 8-3 and it remained intact till the end of the match.

The subsidiary final was won by Total Nutrition team, which outpaced spirited Black Horse Paints by six and half goals to four. Female polo player Raqia Mansoor and Bilal Haye played brilliantly and fired three goals each for the winning side while Abubakar slammed a brace and Fahad Noon and Mustafa Monnoo contributed one goal each for the losing side.

Former Lahore Polo Club president Brig (r) Humayun Malik graced the final as chief guest, who, along with LPC president Irfan Ali Hyder, distributed prizes and trophies among the winners. Executive committee members Ahmed Nawaz Tiwana and Umar Niazi, LPC secretary Lt Col (r) Shoaib Aftab, players’ families and polo enthusiasts were also present on the occasion. They enjoyed the enthralling polo activity with great fervor and kept on cheering and supporting both the finalist teams.
