KARACHI-Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir has said that the recent US protest on 'illegally modifying American anti-ship missiles was based on sheer misunderstanding which has been clarified at an appropriate level. 'We have and will never violate any convention or principles on that and all international obligations are being honoured by the Pakistan Navy. He was talking to the mediamen after inaugurating the opening session of the international conference on 'Piracy on the High Seas organised by Master Mariners Society of Pakistan (MMSP) at a local hotel here on Monday. Noman Bashir, who is also the Chief Patron of MMSP, further said that piracy has assumed an alarming position affecting the international trade which is largely dependent on sea. He said that the Indian Ocean has narrow water ways called 'choke points such as Malaka, Gulf of Aden etc and pirates find easy targets in these channels. He said that the world community is making joint efforts to counter piracy on the high seas and Pakistan Navy is also an important part of these efforts. Chief of the Naval Staff said that such seminars are important and would go a long way in increasing awareness on the importance of sea. He hoped that the seminar would be professionally rewarding and will bring in focus the issues for the betterment of maritime security.
