ISLAMABAD - The cabinet meeting was proceeding with routine calm when all of a sudden State Minister for Finance Ms Hina Rabbani Khar and Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Dr. Farooq Sattar raised their voices on the issue of increase in power tariff. It happened in the meeting held under the chair of Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani when Dr. Farooq Sattar, who is also Parliamentary Leader of Muttahida Qoumi Movement, opposed the imminent increase in the electricity tariff saying that it would be cruel on part of the government to put extra financial burden on the poor masses who were already financially tight due to sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities. He had yet to complete his point when State Minister for Finance Ms Hina Rabbani Khar interrupted him by saying that the Government was bound to increase the power tariff under the agreement with IMF. Dr. Farooq Sattar raised his voice, saying the people of Pakistan were already pushed to the wall and it would be cruel on the part of the government if they were subjected to more financial burden. He suggested that instead of increasing the power rates the government should tax the landlords by imposing agri tax. Both the ministers were blowing hot and cold when Federal Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf intervened and pacified the situation by saying that the issue of power tariff was not relevant to the cabinet and it was up to NEPRA to decide about the power tariff. Later, the Prime Minister also helped cool down the situation by appeasing the MQM Federal Minister, saying that the government would look into the matter and if they would find some fiscal space the people would definitely be provided with relief.
