ISLAMABAD (APP) - Pakistan possesses a rich cultural and natural heritage and its tourism sector can play a major role to create more job opportunities for the people. Tourism is the most dynamic sector of the world economy and we need to fully exploit its growth potential in a sustainable way to benefit the people of our country, said Minister of Tourism, Dr Atta-Ur-Rehman here on Monday. While addressing a seminar on 'Tourism: Celebrating Diversity, Atta-Ur-Rehman said, Being a popular tourist destination worldwide, the present situation seeks for renewing stronger partnerships amongst all tourism stakeholders to effectively promote and project the tourism potential of Pakistan. Terming the cultural and natural heritage as a major tourist attraction, the minister said, We have to project Pakistan as one of the most attractive destination. The seminar was organized to celebrate World Tourism Day by Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) with an aim to foster awareness among the international community about the importance of Tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic values. Speaking on the occasion, Managing Director PTDC Ghulam Idrees Khan said that Pakistan has the capacity to successfully address some of the main issues which are the basis of the problems like extreme poverty and social harmony. He called for celebrating the World Tourism Day with a firm resolve to promote the tourism potential of the country for projecting soft image of the country among the comity of nations. Secretary Tourism, Ali Arif said that it is high time that the positive contribution of the tourism sector needs to be sustained and negative effects minimized and eliminated. Director General Azad Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Directorate, Dr Mohsin Shakil and Economic Analyst Zafarullah Siddiqui highlighted the diversity of culture and natural heritage of Pakistan in line with the theme of the day. Later, Atta-U-Rehman presented cash prizes and shields to the winners of a Photo competition regarding Tourism Day while professional photographers were among the participants of the exhibition. Afzal Chaudhary, Senior Photographer from Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) won first prize while Mr Javed from INP and Anjum Naveed got second and third prizes respectively. The jury comprised renowned artist, Aftab Khan, A Sami Qureshi, Ms Musarrat Naheed Imam from PNCA and Dr Tabassum Shaheed from Fatima Jinnah Women University. The event provided an opportunity to highlight the wealth of cultural and natural diversity across the globe as well as the role of sustainable tourism in preserving this diversity.
