LAHORE - The cold war between the federal and Punjab governments took a new turn on Tuesday when a federal agency summoned Principal Secretary to Punjab Chief Minister Dr Touqeer on Wednesday (today) to join inquiry about the alleged plot of assassination of Chief Justice Lahore High Court, an investigator of the inquiry told TheNation. A senior FIA officer said the agency had summoned the Principal Secretary through Punjab Chief Secretary as the latter was the real authority of the province. To a question that if Dr Touqeer did not comply with the summons then what would be the next step of FIA, he said: We would just inform the Supreme Court of Pakistan about the response of the person since we are conducting inquiry on the instructions of the apex court. In normal inquiry we summon the accused three times with the interval of one month and if he does not comply with then we take action and register a case against him. After that investigation starts and FIA investigator is bound to challan the accused within 14 days after getting legal opinion from our legal section. Sources in FIA said that the agency has also summoned the editor of an English newspaper who published the news about the plot first. It is worth mentioning here that there was a general perception that Punjab government appeared uneasy over the development. In the meanwhile FIA had summoned and investigated all the concerned people of the inquiry including Col (R) Ehsanur Rehman, the former Special Branch official and the current Punjab Civil Defence Director General and eight other people arrested by the CIA. It is to be noted here that both federal and provincial authorities had declared alleged assassination plot against the LHC CJ bogus. The Punjab Police also declared all the eight suspects in the case innocent after interrogating them. In a message, Special Branch had warned Punjab CM that a group of criminals could try to assassinate the LHC CJ. However, the said top-secret information was allegedly conveyed to the media by Secretary to CM Syed Touqeer Shah. Sources also claimed that FIA had also collected a telephonic recording of the conversation between two people. They claimed that Dr Touqeer was also summoned by the agency earlier but he remained unmoved and finally FIA had summoned him through Punjab chief secretary.
