(De) bunking PAC

The PAC (Public Accounts Committee) is one the most important Committees of the National Assembly and its ultimate cause is to take action against persons accountable for corruption in the public sector organizations. There are twenty members in this committee including the chairman, who for the first time, has been nominated by virtue of being Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, as per the Charter of Democracy (CoD). There are four members to represent Sindh in this committee. They are; Sardar Ali Muhammad Khan Mahar (IND), Mrs. Faryal Talpur (PPPP), Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho (PPPP) & Syed Haider Abbas Rizvi (MQM). It is, of course, a matter of debate how two PPPP representatives have been awarded membership of this committee but an even more unfortunate thing is that for the past several sessions, only one member from Sindh, Syed Haider Abbas Rizvi (MQM), is attending the meeting regularly. Rest of the three members are not showing the least bit of interest in attending the meetings. This is really a sad situation for the people of Sindh. This province has suffered a lot in the past on many platforms because of poor representation and that is happening now in this case also. I request the members belonging to Sindh to attend the PAC meetings regularly and show their sincerity, otherwise it would be better to leave it and provide a chance to some other deserving people to serve Sindh. -IMRAN KHAN SIAL, Karachi, via e-mail, April 19.
