GCU students protest against stopping admissions

LAHORE - A good number of students of GC University staged a protest demonstration outside the varsity on Thursday in favour of their demands. The students were of the view the university management had stopped their admissions at the eleventh hour without giving them any prior notice. Earlier the management, the students said, had sent their admissions but now they were being asked not to appear in the examinations being held in near future. On the other hand, the university management has different stances over the issue. According to varsity spokesman, a few intermediate students of GCU have been restrained from appearing in the annual examinations 2010 under the rules and regulations of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Lahore (BISE). According to the board rules, a student is bound to attend minimum 75 per cent of the delivered lectures otherwise he will not be allowed to sit in the annual examinations. GCU Director Intermediate Studies Anjum Nisar said only 87 of 2,000 GCU intermediate students fell short of this mandatory requirement of the board. However, he said, these 88 students also include those who have been migrated or left the university for other reasons. The director said the board required the educational intuitions to send an undertaking to it that the students have attended minimum 75 per cent of the total delivered lectures. If any student fails to attend 75 per cent lectures, the board requires the educational intuitions to inform about it minimum 14 days before the commencement of the examination. In reply to question, the director said the GCU would have no objection if board changes or relaxes the rules for the students.
