Karachi - Speaker Sindh Assembly Agha Siraj Durrani has notified MQM leader Khawaja Izhar ul Hassan as the leader of opposition in Sindh Assembly on Wednesday, removing Pakistan Muslim League Functional lawmaker Shaheryar Maher from the post.  According to a notification issued on Wednesday, the decision was taken under the sub rule 3 of rule 25 of rules and procedures of the Sindh Assembly after 44 members of the opposition party MQM submitted requisition for the opposition leader seat. He would be entitled with salary and privileges of the minister.   Despite parting ways with provincial government in October 2014, the MQM despite having majority in the opposition did not apply for the opposition leader post. The party was also ready to become a part of the coalition government after being offered by the former president Asif Ali Zardari in February 2015, however, later the decision was halted.

Meanwhile after MQM Chief Altaf Hussain asked the party to play its role as opposition after winning NA-246, the MQM lawmakers submitted a requisition in Sindh Assembly on Wednesday morning for the slot. The requisition was accepted by the speaker after verification of the signatures of 44 lawmakers.  Talking to media while submitting requisition for the opposition leader slot, the MQM parliamentary leader in Sindh Assembly Syed Sardar Ahmed said that the party was involved in by-election on NA-246 and local bodies polls in cantonment board, therefore it could not nominate its opposition leader.

“Soon after we are relieved from these activities, we have nominated Khawaja Izhar as opposition leader on the direction of our party chief,” he said adding that they were biggest opposition in the assembly with 51 seats.  He said that MQM would play its active role as opposition party.  Speaking on the occasion, Khawaja Izhar said that they would raise voice of the people while remaining in opposition and instead of carrying policy of criticism they would work to the betterment of Sindh.  Speaking over how long MQM would remain in opposition, Khawaja Izhar said that as long as the assembly continues, MQM will remain part of opposition.
